Public consultation: carbon certification
BNDES and MMA held a public consultation on the state of carbon certification in the Brazilian voluntary market that aimed to gather contributions from civil society, specialists, and sector entities to enhance national guidelines.
The process included 147 valid contributions and several meetings with representatives from certification bodies, project developers, public institutions, and associations. The initiative sought to understand the limits of the current certification and propose institutional, methodological, and regulatory improvements.
Analysis showed dissatisfaction with the predominance of international certifiers, whose methodologies are considered poorly suited to the socio-environmental and economic reality of Brazil. The main challenges identified include high costs, technical barriers, and the exclusion of small producers and traditional communities. The collected data will serve as a basis for future studies and for the development of solutions that meet the specific demands of the Brazilian carbon market.
